Wood Badge for the 21st Century

Sioux Council Training

YES!  There are no minimum tenure requirements for attending.  Just make sure you’ve completed your basic training and earned your TRAINED patch for your primary position in scouting. For questions about completing training requirements, contact the Sioux Council Training Chair Diane Polyak at diane@siouxtraining.org

By utilizing trained volunteers and a scout camp environment, the course cost primarily covers all course program materials, food, a course T-shirt, and the National BSA course fee.  Remember that when a participant registers by Feb. 18th the course fee is $190 and there are scholarship opportunities.

The course draws upon the most current leadership models used by corporate America, academic circles, and successful outdoor leadership organizations throughout the country at a small fraction of the cost corporations pay.  Using the scouting model for course delivery is a natural setting for Scouters to reinforce the team-building skills learned. Also, Wood Badge utilizes a “ticket” in which the participant is committed to utilizing those skills in a post-course practical experience.

Can any Cub Scout leader attend?

How does Wood Badge compare to leadership training for corporations?

How can corporate-quality, world-class leadership training be given for only $210 when most training of this caliber costs much more?

I’m a new leader, can I attend?

Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity coaches and assistants are required to complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training as part of their basic training prior to attending Wood Badge.  All others are encouraged, but not required, to complete IOLS.

I don’t have outdoor skills, can I attend?

YES! Wood Badge is a fast paced, advanced course that assumes a certain level of understanding of unit operations and terminology. In order to ensure a rewarding experience at Wood Badge, it is essential to have basic training first.

I’ve been a Scoutmaster for 5 years already. Do I have to take basic training before signing up for Wood Badge?

The in-camp portion of Wood Badge training is spaced out over two three-day weekends (Friday morning - Sunday afternoon). In addition, there is a half day introductory meeting prior to the course.  After the course, participants have 18 months to complete their ticket.

How much time will Wood Badge take?

No. Because so much information is presented in so short a period of time, attendance at each session is mandatory.

Can I miss any of the scheduled Wood Badge training dates?

After taking the "practical phase" of Wood Badge at camp, there is an "application phase" where you apply the skills learned. After completing the goals you set for yourself (with a time limit of eighteen months following completion of the practical phase) you will receive the Wood Badge beads, neckerchief, and woggle.
